A Plethora of Illegal Extensions

Posted: December 15th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

The addition of illegal floors and extensions to older lilong and shikumen housing is pretty common in Shanghai. As he bulldozers move in and take down buildings so occasionally a strange survivor or stubborn resistor (nail house) remains – this one, close to the junction of Hailun Road and Zhoujiazui Road (formerly Urga Road and Point Road) is stubbornly hanging on and must have more illegal roof extensions than any building I’ve seen for quite a while.

    Paul,

That’s stunning…thanks for posting the photo.

And I just wanted to say how very much I appreciated that gem of a map that you put up the other day.

    Best,

    Lawrence
