Some Posts on Columbia Road, Columbia Circle and Amherst Road – V – Xinhua Guest House

The Xinhua Guest House on Xinhua Road (Amherst Road) is now a hotel but was previously a marvellous German-style residence. Though there have been the inevitable renovations and plastering over of many walls, suspended ceilings etc etc, the building remains relatively intact and has retained the garden at the rear of the property. The three-storied villa was completed in 1925 as a wood and brick structure with sloping red tile roofs.

The front of the building can be seen from Amherst Avenue though with the inevitable obscuring walls and gates. Less often seen is the more impressive rear of the building, shown below, and the garden which connects to some nice lane houses further into Columbia Circle.
