Xujiahui Origin – Any Ideas?

Posted: October 23rd, 2010 | 3 Comments »

Referring to yesterday’s post on the restoration of the old St. Ignatius School I noted next to the school a sort of mock stained glass logo (below) saying simply Xujiahui Origin. I couldn’t work out what this was or what it really related to – some sort of private initiative or a government attempt to brand Xujiahui? I’ve got no idea, so if anyone does have an idea do let me know.

    Paul,

I have no idea whether this is part of any city or district campaign and did not notice any such signs when in XJH recently.

However someone else has noticed this sign. Please see the link below.

Is EW short for “East West”? That would seem to be appropriate given the history of the area.

This sign (Xujiahui Yuan) is probably there to mark the location where XJH area urbanization first started.

The government recently created the idea of “Waitan Yuan” – the Origin of the Bund to mark where the Bund development first began. The British built the very first Bund buildings where the Huangpu meets the Suzhou Creek.

I wonder whether the XJH Origin idea comes from the Bund Origin?

It’s like a heritage trail including some monuments and sites which are defined the past and origin of Hujiahui by some specialists.
