You Can Keep Your iWhatever, I’m a Zenith 5-S-313 Man
Posted: September 22nd, 2010 | 2 Comments »iThis, iThat, iBollix – I’m sticking with my trusty Zenith 5-S-313 – brand new in 1940, the highest tech in Shanghai and the smoothest lines ever seen in a wireless. Truly beautiful in a way an iPod Nano could only envy surely. And available at the Scientific Service Company (presumably the Apple Experience Store of its day) on Museum Road (now Huqiu Road). Reject the i tyranny – go Zenith today and tune in for real!
Paul,
I’m with you all the way on the Zenith 5-S-313. Sadly, I must report that there don’t seem to be any available on eBay (although there do seem to be enough components from 1940’s tube sets that you might well be able to build your own!)
Thanks, as always, for reminding us of bygone days.
Lawrence
Bakelite – so I expect they chipped when dropped and so few perhaps are still around. I’m actually rather patriotic (in an old brands way rather than a war in Iraq way of course) and am a loyal Roberts customer with both reconditioned originals and the new retro DAB radios – http://www.robertsradio.co.uk/Products/DAB_radios/Revival_DAB/index.htm
