Lazarus Opticians on the Nanking Road

Posted: May 13th, 2011 | 6 Comments »

I met a bloke the other day who swore blind that the Pudong side of the Huangpu was beautiful and Puxi, the Bund, just a bunch of old relics. I told him he needed an optician – and in 1937 he could have wandered along Nanking Road (Nanjing Road) to Lazarus Opticians. Not quite sure what the hell their out there slogan means though!!

I think it means that you won’t be squinting and peering myopically at any and all, if you got yourself some decent glasses …

Even I found this slogan very difficult to understand . But I must say they use good brain!

I don’t know what the slogan means, butt I’m interested as I think Lazarus Opticians must have been the business of cousins of mine. The Lazarus family was extensive and many were in the business, from Britain to North America and to India and beyond. I would be interested in any more information.

Sorry, I don’t know any more about them and have no idea if they were part of a chain or not. Apologies

I have since been sent a photo of a postcard with the Lazarus business in the foreground. The sender says it’s of Shanghai, so presumably in Nanking Road.

Eve, can you send to me – I would love to see and can probably identify the location? Paul (paul@chinarhyming.com)
