East China Normal University

Happened to be spending some time out at East China Normal  University in western Shanghai  (I was due to teach a course on retailing in China which ended in a bit of a disaster but that’s another story!). There’s nothing particularly old out there worth noting – ECNU was founded in 1951 around the existing Great China University and Kwang Hua University. The old Qunxian building of the GCU still exists – an old pic below – now known as the Wenshi building. There are also a few older structures pictured below…and a statue of Mao for those who like to look at such things.

This was one of the two main buildings comprising the Chapei Civil Assembly Center, an internment camp for Americans, Britions, and other Allied nationals in China, 1943-1945. The other main building was demolished for the elevated road some time ago.
