Those PUMC Roofs Again

Posted: June 22nd, 2010 | No Comments »

I posted a while back on the traditional eaved dovetail roofs of the Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) after coming across an old postcard of PUMC (postcards of hospitals! an odd niche and probably not best suited to the ‘wish you were here’ school of postcard scribbling!). The roofs were an addition to the modern looking buildings of PUMC originally suggested by ETC Werner (or so he claimed), a former British Consul in China and Sinologist (and also a main character in my forthcoming book Murder in Peking). The inevitable walls around PUMC stopped me getting a good shot of the old roofs last time I posted but recently, staying in some degree of luxury in the Grand Hyatt in Peking, I had a good view down onto the roofs so here they are again from above. Note to PUMC – a coat of paint wouldn’t go amiss lads!
