Coming Down Alert – Qipu Lu

Coming down - Qipu Lu - Hongkoujolly rogerAs I’ve argued before one side effect of the ridiculous Shanghai EXPO and its drivel driven slogan ‘Better City, Better Life’ is that the city will probably lose more old buildings this year in the run up to the shenanigans than any previous year. One area particularly keen on mass demolition is the Hongkou District where absolutely nothing seems safe in 2009. Around Qipu Lu a vast amount of old housing has been demolished so far this year and it seems that there’s no end in sight – most will apparently be replaced with yet more shopping malls.

We first fell in love with Shanghai wandering in shikumen neighborhoods north of Suzhou creek.

One day, the district government, their relatives in real-estate development and their multinational enablers will try to re-animate the street life that made downtown Shanghai distinctive. They’ll try to bring back the real Jianyeli, Wujiang Lu, Qipu Lu and all of South City. Maybe they’ll institute a mixed-use scheme for the unoccupied obsolescent malls and condos they’re building now.

But so much preservation discourse centers on old buildings; vital neighborhoods are disappearing along with the architecture; a war on the poor in central Shanghai.

Or maybe the refugees will magically reconstitute a way of living in the harmonious ghettos out in Nanhui.

I wonder, do you sense any activism for preservation in Shanghai–other than a few expats and the evicted?

Sadly no I do not – in fact quite the opposite. Though a few professors etc have tried to stave of destruction – see my post on the old Rowing Club http://www.chinarhyming.com/2009/07/19/shanghai-rowing-club-in-all-its-glory-destroyed/ – they have been roundly ignored and told to shut up by the authorities. The destruction continues apace.
